Thirty degrees and four elbows

Bending a factory-built chimney around a beam or a ridge is allowed, within limits. The code keeps every part of the assembly within 30 degrees of vertical and allows no more than four elbows in it, and the manual can set tighter limits for its own system. Each offset also needs support and a strap where the manual shows one. Those numbers shape the route more than anything else in the attic.

When a straight run is not possible, we draw the offsets first and check them against both limits before the route is priced. Fewer offsets also mean fewer joints to check later.

How tall the chimney stands above the roof

A chimney has to end high enough to draft and to keep sparks away from the roof. For masonry, the code sets two minimums: 3 feet above the spot where the chimney comes through the roof, and 2 feet above anything on the building within a 10-foot radius.

Chimney height on a factory-built system follows what its manual sets. Roof slope, a nearby ridge or a taller wing of the house can push that height up, and a chimney more than a few feet above the roof can need bracing. We work out the height before the route is final. Bracing parts come from the chimney maker's list.

The throat and the damper above the opening

Above a masonry opening, the brick sits on a noncombustible lintel, and the throat, the narrow passage into the smoke chamber, begins at least 8 inches above the top of the opening. A ferrous metal damper sits there, operable from the room. Getting that height right is part of what keeps smoke from rolling out the top of the opening.

On a new masonry build we set the lintel, the throat and the damper frame to those dimensions and check the damper through its full travel before the smoke chamber goes up. A damper set too low shows itself on the first fire.
