Cutting a reglet for the counter flashing

A reglet is a slot sawn into a mortar joint to take the top edge of the counter flashing. It is cut along the joint rather than into the face of the brick, deep enough to hold the bent edge of the metal firmly, and cleaned of dust so sealant can grip the sides.

The counter flashing's top edge is bent to fit into the slot, pushed in, wedged tight and sealed. On a sloped roof the counter flashing is stepped, each piece set into the joint at its own height, so it follows the slope while each top edge stays in a horizontal joint.

Soldered corners and sealed laps

Where flashing turns a corner or two pieces overlap, the joint has to be closed. With copper, corners and laps can be soldered into a single piece of metal. Stainless steel can also be soldered with the right flux and technique, and laps can be sealed with a sealant suited to the metal.

Soldering removes the seam entirely, which is why we favor it wherever the metal allows. Sealed laps work when the lap is long enough and runs downhill. How corners and laps are joined on your chimney depends on which metal allows which method. Whichever method is used, the corner is checked with water before the counter flashing closes over it.

Checking the flashing from inside the attic

From the attic, with a light, we can see the underside of the roof deck around the chimney. Daylight showing through at the chimney edge, dark staining or soft wood on one side, or water trails on the rafters all point to specific pieces of flashing.

We also check that the roof deck stops short of the chimney with the clearance the chimney needs, rather than being jammed against the brick. The attic check is repeated after the first heavy rain following the repair, as the simplest confirmation that the new flashing is doing its job. Any wet insulation found against the chimney is pulled back to dry.
