Light around a closed damper
With the damper closed and the room dark, hold a flashlight in the firebox and aim it up at the plate. Light showing around the plate means air is moving through it. A throat damper does not seal tightly even when new, but a warped plate or a frame that has pulled away from the masonry leaves a real gap, and cooled indoor air leaves the house through it whenever the fireplace sits unused.
If the frame is sound, a new plate can restore the fit. If the frame is gone or the throat is damaged, we price a top sealing damper, which seals against a gasket where the flue ends.
The ash door in the firebox floor
Some masonry fireboxes have a small cast door in the floor that drops ashes into a pit below, emptied through a clean-out door lower down. The door can rust shut, warp, or lose its frame, and a door that no longer closes lets air flow up through the firebox floor and pull at the fire. A frozen door is freed and cleaned. A broken one is replaced with a door sized to its frame, or the opening is closed with firebrick if the pit is no longer used. Either way, we check whether the pit below needs emptying first.
Screens that keep sparks on the hearth
A wood fire throws sparks, and the screen across the opening is what keeps them off the floor. Mesh curtains sag, tear or come off their rods, and on a factory-built unit the screen is a listed part replaced with the maker's own. We check that the screen closes fully across the opening without gaps at the sides or the bottom, that its rods and pulls work, and that nothing combustible is kept close to the hearth where a spark could land. A torn or missing screen is a small line on the estimate, but it is a safety line, and it goes near the top.
