Sound tile can stay. The new liner runs down its center, and the tile becomes a sleeve around it, adding a layer between the flue and the brick. When the chimney's clearances cannot be confirmed

A liner's zero-clearance rating depends on its listing and, for some systems, on insulation. Liner makers say that if the chimney's own airspace to combustibles cannot be confirmed, the liner must be installed with an approved insulation wrap.

Clearances can be hard to confirm: the chimney sits behind drywall, the attic side is packed with insulation, or framing was built tight to the brick. In those cases the insulated system is what the listing requires. We say whether insulation is required for that reason or recommended for draft and condensation. The insulation also takes up room, which the flue proof has to allow for.

Old tile standing above the crown

Old clay tile can stand a few inches proud of the crown. If it is sound, one liner maker's instructions allow it to stay, with the top plate and cap fitted over it.

If it is cracked or crumbling, it is cut back flush with the crown using a chisel, taking care that pieces do not fall down the flue, and any that do are removed from the bottom. The cut surface and any cracks are filled with mortar so the top plate sits flat and seals against the masonry. The top is checked for level before the plate is set, whichever way it went.

Why the flue is swept before relining

Liner makers call for the chimney and the smoke chamber to be cleaned thoroughly before their product goes in. Old creosote left in the flue becomes fuel sitting around the new liner, in a space nobody will be able to reach again.

The sweep also exposes the tile and joints for a last look, and it clears the smoke chamber so the bottom connection can be seen and fitted properly. It is the first line of the relining estimate, done on the same visit as the installation or just before it. A sweep also shows whether any glaze needs removal before the liner goes in.
