Soot-clogged mesh and a lazy fire

Screen mesh sits in the path of every bit of soot and creosote that leaves a wood fire. Over a season the deposit narrows the openings, and a mesh that met the open-area rule when new may fall short. The symptoms show inside the house: a fire that is slow to catch, smoke that curls out at the top of the opening, and a smell of smoke in the room the next day. Brushing the mesh during a sweep clears it. What to look for from the yard after a storm

Salt carried on the wind settles on a cap and draws moisture to it, and chloride salt attacks metal that would last for years further inland. Some cap makers offer a Type 316 stainless line, sold as marine grade, for sites near salt water, since the molybdenum alloyed into 316 resists chloride pitting better than the common grade. A stainless-steel guide from the International Molybdenum Association adds that sheltered, rain-shadowed crevices hold salt longer than surfaces rain rinses, and a cap screen is full of such crevices.
