Push-button igniters on standing pilots

Standing-pilot units light with a piezo igniter, a spring-loaded crystal that makes a spark when you press the button. It needs no battery and has few parts, so the faults are simple: a wire that has slipped off the electrode, an electrode that has moved away from the pilot hood, or a crystal that has worn out. The maker's chart says to check for a spark at the electrode and the pilot.

If the wire is sound and there is no spark, the fix is the igniter or the pilot assembly, whichever carries the failed part on that model. It is a small repair once the fault is found.

When the gas valve itself has failed

A gas valve is replaced only after the parts around it test good. If the thermocouple produces a healthy reading and the pilot still drops out, or the thermopile and the switch circuit test good and the main burner will not open, the valve is the remaining suspect, and the maker's chart says so. The replacement comes from the maker's list for that model and gas type. Once it is in, the connections are leak-checked with solution, inlet and manifold pressures are read against the rating plate, and the unit is taken through a full lighting cycle before we leave.

Leaks inside a direct-vent run

Pipe inside a pipe is how a direct-vent run is built, with exhaust in the middle and intake air around it. If a joint in the inner pipe separates, exhaust leaks into the intake and the burner starts breathing its own combustion products, which can make the flame and the pilot go out while the unit is running. The maker's troubleshooting chart lists an inner pipe leak for exactly that symptom, along with a horizontal run pitched the wrong way.

We check the joints we can reach, the pitch of horizontal sections, and the collar connections at the unit. Joints hidden in walls are checked where the manual gives access.
