Mapping the cracks before choosing a repair
Before we propose anything, the cracks on a crown are mapped: where each one starts, where it runs, and how wide it is along its length. A sketch shows them. The pattern matters as much for the diagnosis as the width does.
Cracks radiating from the flue corners point to the tile pushing on the crown. A crack running parallel to an edge, a short way in, points to a feathered edge breaking off. A web of fine cracks across the whole surface points to shrinkage in the original pour. Each pattern leads to a different repair, which is why the map comes first.
What goes into the bond break at the flue
The bond break is the flexible joint between the crown and each flue tile. It lets the tile grow with heat without pushing on the concrete. The code calls for it to be caulked, following ASTM C1283, and the BIA detail shows a backer rod with sealant over it.
In practice we wrap the tile with a compressible material before the concrete is placed, then rake the top back and fill it with a primed backer and a sealant suited to heat and weather. The finished joint stays flexible. A crown poured tight against the tile, with no gap at all, is the fault this detail exists to prevent.
A flashing sheet under the crown
The Brick Industry Association's details put a sheet of flashing directly under a cast crown, running past the inside of the brick and turned up against the flue tile. The flashing catches any water that gets through the crown and sends it out as a drip beyond the face.
Technical Note 19B highly recommends flashing under cast-in-place caps and notes that it can double as the bond break between crown and brick. We include it where the chimney's construction allows it, and we say whether your crown gets one and why. The flashing metal is chosen to sit in mortar without corroding.
