Every chimney cap has to be fastened to something, and some are screwed straight down through the crown. Each screw is a hole in the slab that keeps rain out of the chimney. If the holes were not sealed, or the sealant has aged, water follows the screws into the core of the stack.
We check how the cap is fastened and whether the screw holes are sealed. The fix can be as simple as resealing them, or moving the cap's fixing onto the flue tile itself so the slab has no holes at all. The holes are then tested with the rest of the crown, before and after the fix.
The storm collar on a factory-built chimney
Where a factory-built chimney pipe comes up through the chase cover, a storm collar clamps around the pipe and sheds water over the joint. If the collar slips, loosens or its sealant fails, rain runs down the outside of the pipe into the chase.
That water can reach the fireplace unit and the framing without ever touching the chase cover itself, so a leak on a factory-built system is not automatically a cover problem.
