Some smoke chambers are built by stepping each brick course inward until the opening narrows to the size of the flue. Every step is a small upward-facing ledge, and each one holds soot and flakes that a brush from above slides straight past.

Those chambers are scraped course by course with a hand tool through the open damper, working from the top step down. The steps also trap heat and deposit unevenly, so the note records whether the chamber is stepped or parged smooth, because a stepped chamber explains why some fireplaces hold on to a smell after a sweep.
