The spark electrode and its cable
The spark that lights a pilot jumps a small gap between an electrode and a grounded point, and the gap is set by the maker. Too wide, and the spark weakens or jumps somewhere else. A cracked ceramic around the electrode lets the spark leak to the metal body, which shows as clicking with no light. The ignition cable runs close to hot parts, and a cable that has melted or buckled from heat is replaced and shielded where the manual says.

A spill switch doing its job
A natural vent gas fireplace can carry a spill switch, a heat-sensing switch near the draft hood. If exhaust spills back into the room instead of rising up the vent, the heat trips the switch and the valve shuts, and on some units the switch has to be reset by hand.
A trip is a message about the vent: a blockage, a cold vent that has not started to draw, a vent that is too short or too long, or a house pulling air through it. We find that cause and fix it. The switch is tested and replaced if faulty, and it is not bypassed.
Ticks and pings from a warming firebox
Gas fireplaces made of steel expand as they heat and contract as they cool, and the manuals describe some ticking and pinging during those cycles as normal. What is not normal is a new noise: a loud bang at ignition, a roaring or whistling flame, or a rattle that tracks the blower. A delayed ignition bang points to a pilot that lights the burner late, and a roaring flame points to pressure or air.
