Siding, standoffs and heat

Vinyl siding needs protection from a termination's heat, and vent makers supply a standoff or siding shield for it. The standoff holds the termination out from the siding so the cladding is not in contact with hot parts, and the kit instructions say how it is mounted and flashed into the wall.

On brick or stucco, the termination mounts to the wall surface with its own trim. The manuals also require the termination to sit flush with the wall surface rather than recessed into it, so exhaust can clear the wall. Stucco and brick still need the termination sealed to the wall as the kit shows.

What the unit sits on

The manuals we install from let a unit sit directly on wood flooring or a subfloor. When it would sit on carpet, tile or another combustible surface other than wood flooring, the manuals call for a metal or wood panel under the full width and depth of the unit. The unit is then secured to the floor or to the framing with the fasteners and points the manual shows, so it cannot shift when the facing is installed or the glass is removed for service. Raised platforms are built to the same rule, with the panel on top. The panel goes on before the unit is slid into place.

Choosing termination parts near salt spray

Salt spray speeds up corrosion of exposed steel, and a new vent termination spends its life outdoors. Near the coast, we look at what the vent maker offers for the termination, its trim and its fasteners, including stainless or coated options where the maker lists them, and use those parts on the exterior. The termination is placed where it can be reached for rinsing and inspection, and the manual's clearances still govern its spot. The corrosion-resistant parts chosen are recorded, so they can be matched if anything is replaced later. Rinsing the cap with fresh water now and then slows the salt down.
