A trial area shows how much product the brick drinks, how it looks once dry, and whether water beads on it after cure. BIA recommends trial areas of at least 10 square feet in a spot that represents the surface to be treated, cured as the product maker directs before judging. On a chimney, that means one section of one face done first, sprayed with water once it has cured, and compared side by side with untreated brick next to it before any decision on the rest.

Holding off while salts are still coming out

White efflorescence is a sign that water is still travelling through the masonry and depositing salt where it dries. BIA's position is that brickwork with a history of it should be coated only after the moisture source has been corrected, because salts that cannot reach the surface may crystallize just behind it and break the face. So the steps run in order: the deposit is brushed off dry, the water path is found and repaired, and the wall is watched for fresh deposits before any treatment is booked. If the white returns, the repair is not finished, and treatment waits.

What the treated brick looks like

Once cured, a penetrating treatment is meant to leave the chimney looking much as it did before. The product's own literature describes little or no gloss and no change to natural color or texture, while noting that dense surfaces can darken slightly and that existing stains may become more visible. BIA adds that a noticeable sheen after treatment can mean the wrong product or poor application. The trial area is therefore judged dry, in daylight, from the ground as well as up close, and compared with untreated brick next to it before the rest of the stack is done.
