Pokers, rotary handles and chains

Dampers are worked by one of a few mechanisms: a poker handle that pushes the plate open and hooks at a notch, a rotary handle on the face of the fireplace turning a rod, or a chain running to a damper at the top of the flue. Each fails in its own way. Pokers bend and their notches wear, rotary rods seize where they pass through the masonry, and chains stretch or pull free of their bracket. The repair may be freeing, straightening or replacing the linkage rather than the damper itself, and it is priced apart from the plate so you are not buying a new damper to fix a handle.

Raised hearths and the thinner extension

When the floor of the firebox sits at least 8 inches above the hearth extension, the code allows the extension to be thinner: at least 3/8 inch of approved noncombustible material instead of the 2 inches it otherwise requires. Factory-built fireplaces with an outside air kit have a duct from an exterior inlet to a small damper near the firebox. The outside end is screened, and the code calls for corrosion-resistant mesh with openings no larger than a quarter inch. Lint, leaves and insects can close the screen, and the inside damper can stick shut. Either way the fire goes back to feeding on room air, which is what the kit was installed to prevent. We open the control, check that air actually moves at the firebox end, and clean or replace the screen and damper parts from the maker's list.
