Two very different smells come out of fireplaces. Creosote smells smoky and tar-like, lingers for weeks or months, and gets stronger when the house draws air down the flue. A framed chimney has a skin of siding or stucco around a wooden box, topped by a metal chase cover. An animal does not have to reach the flue to move in. A cover rusted through, a collar that has dropped away from the pipe, missing corner trim or a loose siding panel each opens a way into the space around the metal chimney.
Nesting inside the chase is a problem of its own, because the chimney's maker requires clear air space around the pipe, and debris packed against it has to come out. The fix for the opening, whether a new cover, a reset collar or siding repair, is listed with the animal work.
