The blower's thermal switch

Blowers on gas fireplaces can be turned on by a thermal switch, a small disc that closes once the firebox reaches a set temperature and opens again after the unit cools. So a blower waits several minutes to start and runs for a while after shutdown.

A switch that no longer closes leaves the blower dead, and one that sticks closed leaves it running. We check the switch and the speed control, clean the wheel and housing, and confirm the blower has power at its outlet. A missing outlet is an electrician's job. The switch sits against the firebox, where the manual places it.

Ticks and pings from a warming firebox

Gas fireplaces made of steel expand as they heat and contract as they cool, and the manuals describe some ticking and pinging during those cycles as normal. What is not normal is a new noise: a loud bang at ignition, a roaring or whistling flame, or a rattle that tracks the blower. A delayed ignition bang points to a pilot that lights the burner late, and a roaring flame points to pressure or air.

On service we listen through a full cycle and note which sounds are the steel and which are a fault. Anything that is a fault is written up with what we heard and when.

Termination hardware near salt spray

Salt spray corrodes steel faster than inland air does, and a gas fireplace's vent termination sits outside in whatever the wind carries. On a vent cap, rust shows first at fasteners, screen mesh and cut edges, and a screen that corrodes shut restricts both exhaust and intake on a direct-vent unit. Close to the coast, we look at the termination cap, its screen and its fasteners closely on each service and note early corrosion before it spreads. Replacement caps come from the vent maker's list for that system, including any corrosion-resistant option the maker offers. Stainless fasteners are used where the maker's list offers them.
