Soffits, eaves and porch ceilings

Heat and exhaust rise, so the manual sets how far below a soffit or eave a termination has to sit. A ventilated soffit, with openings that could take exhaust into the attic, needs more distance than a solid one. Porches and decks are handled separately: a termination may sit under a veranda, porch or deck only when it is open on the sides the manual specifies, and at the height it gives. Vinyl soffits can deform from heat, and some makers warn against terminating beneath them.

We check each overhead surface near the chosen spot. The measurements go on the plan.

Sizing the supply to the input

Full rated input, at the pressure on the rating plate, is what the burner needs, measured at the valve with the burner running. The supply line from the meter or tank has to deliver that while the water heater, range and any furnace run too. Sizing that line is the gas contractor's job, done to the fuel gas code's tables, and it may mean a larger line or a new branch rather than a tap off the nearest pipe.

At start-up the inlet reading tells whether the supply did its job. A low inlet reading at start-up goes back to the gas contractor instead of into an adjustment at the valve.

Choosing termination parts near salt spray

Salt spray speeds up corrosion of exposed steel, and a new vent termination spends its life outdoors. Near the coast, we look at what the vent maker offers for the termination, its trim and its fasteners, including stainless or coated options where the maker lists them, and use those parts on the exterior. The termination is placed where it can be reached for rinsing and inspection, and the manual's clearances still govern its spot. The corrosion-resistant parts chosen are recorded, so they can be matched if anything is replaced later. Rinsing the cap with fresh water now and then slows the salt down.
