Saving the original brick

Sound brick from the take-down is the best match the chimney will ever get, so it is sorted on the roof. Pieces with intact faces and edges are set aside; cracked, soft or face-damaged brick is discarded.

Saved brick is cleaned of old mortar by chipping or with a masonry hammer, without breaking the edges, and stacked by which face was out. Relaying weathered faces outward keeps the rebuilt section close to the color of the rest of the chimney. Brick with old paint or heavy soot staining is kept for inner courses where it will not show.

Casting a crown on a rebuilt chimney

The crown on a rebuild is cast, either in place with forms built around the top course or as a precast slab set in mortar. It is sloped away from the flue so water runs off, and it projects past the brick on every side.

Under the projecting edge, a drip groove or edge makes water fall clear instead of running back along the underside and down the brick face. The code asks for that drip edge and for the slope (FBC R1003.9.1). The crown is kept damp and protected while it cures, as its mix's data sheet directs.

A cricket behind a wide chimney

On the uphill side of a chimney, water running down the roof piles against the masonry. A narrow chimney splits the flow on its own; a wide one needs help. The code requires a cricket, a small ridged diverter, where the chimney measures more than 30 inches parallel to the ridge and does not meet the ridge (FBC R1003.20).

Changing the chimney's width or position during a rebuild is the time to check that requirement. The cricket ties into the roof covering, so its builder and its junction with the new flashing are settled before work starts.
