The crown seal around the flue tile
The crown is the concrete, stone or metal top of a masonry chimney, and the code asks three things of it: a slope that sheds water, a drip edge, and a sealant-filled bond break where the flue tile passes through, following ASTM C1283 (FBC R1003.9.1).
The bond break matters because the tile heats and grows faster than the crown. Without a flexible joint, the tile pushes on the crown until one of them cracks. From the roof, the seal is checked for gaps, sealant gone hard, and cracks radiating from the tile corners, which are a sign it has already failed.
Cracks in the flue tile, and their causes
A crack running up a flue tile, or a corner broken away, points to heat that rose faster than the tile could take, such as a chimney fire or a very hot fire lit in a cold flue. Settling can crack tile too, and those cracks tend to start near the joints. Pieces of tile on the smoke shelf show that damage has gone past a hairline.
