Where it passes a ceiling or floor, a firestop spacer does the same job.

Horizontal pipe keeps the clearance the manual lists, which on some systems is larger above the pipe than beside it. Air spaces around the pipe stay open, with no insulation packed in. Joints are locked as the vent maker's instructions show.

Keeping clear of the gas meter

The gas meter's pressure regulator has a small vent that can release gas, and a fireplace termination nearby could ignite it or draw it in. The clearance table in the manual sets a minimum distance between the termination and the regulator vent outlet, along with separate distances from mechanical air intakes such as those on air handlers and ventilators.

On the site walk we find the meter and any intake on the same wall, measure to each, and keep the termination away from both. If the best remaining spot is too close, the route changes. Both distances go on the plan.

An existing chimney or flue in the wall can look like a free vent path, but a vented gas fireplace uses the vent system its manual lists, run from the unit to its own termination. A vent tied into a wood-burning chimney, or shared with a water heater or furnace, is outside what the manuals permit.

Where an old chimney is to carry a gas vent, that is an insert or liner job with its own listed parts. The new vent route is drawn in full, from the unit to its own termination. That keeps each appliance's draft and exhaust separate. No existing flue is borrowed.
