Type N, Type S and the stack above the roof
The Brick Industry Association's mortar selection table covers chimneys directly. For parapets and chimneys, which stand exposed above the roof, it recommends Type N mortar and lists Type S as the alternate. Type N is an all-purpose mix with good bond and workability; Type S has higher compressive and flexural bond strength, and masons use the two interchangeably where the job's strength needs are met. What the table does not recommend for an exposed stack are the extremes: the hard, stiff Type M and the soft Type O.
We name the type so another mason could check the choice. A mortar sold as extra strong is not the upgrade it sounds like on a chimney.
Loose courses at the top of the stack
Brick in the uppermost courses is open to weather on every side and to whatever runs off the crown above it. Once the mortar holding those units has washed out, the bricks rock or lift when pushed, and water pours straight into the inside of the stack. Resetting works when only a handful are loose: each unit is lifted, cleaned of old mortar and bedded again.
When the rocking extends across several courses and through the wall, the section is dismantled to the first solid course and relaid. The crown and any cap are removed beforehand and set back on the finished brick.
The key test for soft mortar
A house key or a small screwdriver is enough to test a mortar joint. Drag it along the joint with firm pressure. Sound mortar resists and leaves a shallow scratch; spent mortar crumbles, and sand runs out onto your hand. The test is useful from inside an attic or at the base of a chimney you can reach safely.
Joints that fail it need raking and repointing, and the pattern of where they fail, all over or just on one face or near the top, tells us where water has been getting in. Telling us what you found when you call helps us plan the visit.
