Why firebox joints are kept a quarter inch wide

The building code limits the joints between firebricks to a quarter inch, and the reason is practical. Refractory mortar holds up to heat, but it is still the softest part of the lining, and a wide joint gives heat and flame more of it to work on. When we repoint a firebox, the old mortar is raked out to sound depth, the joint is cleaned and dampened as the mortar maker directs, and new medium-duty refractory mortar is packed in and struck flush. Joints that were laid wide to begin with cannot be narrowed without relaying the brick, so we note where that applies.

When the house pulls against the fireplace

A fire needs air, and in a tight house with a range hood, bath fans or a clothes dryer running, the fireplace can become the easiest path for outside air to come in. Smoke then comes down instead of going up. The code's answer is an exterior air supply to the fireplace, unless mechanical ventilation keeps the room at neutral or positive pressure.

On a repair visit we test it directly: a fire lit with every exhaust fan off, then with them on, and then with a window open. The difference between the three tells us whether the fireplace or the house is the problem.

Loose tile at the front edge of the hearth

The front edge of the hearth extension takes the heat of the fire and the traffic of the room, and tile there can loosen when the adhesive under it was not meant for the heat. A hollow sound when you tap the tile is the sign. The repair lifts the loose pieces, removes the old adhesive down to a clean noncombustible base, and resets the tile in a setting material rated for the temperature at that spot. Matching an older tile can be the hard part, so you know whether we are resetting your original pieces or need replacements.
