Building the forms for a cast crown

A cast crown is shaped by its forms. Boards or form material are fixed around the top of the chimney, set out past each face by the planned overhang and level all the way round. A strip fixed to the underside of the form creates the drip groove.

Inside the forms, the top surface is shaped to slope from the flue tiles down to the edge on every side. The forms stay on until the concrete can hold its shape, and they come off without breaking the edge. The forms decide whether the finished crown sheds water or sits up there as a lump of concrete.

The drip groove under the overhang

Water running off the edge of a crown wants to curl back along the underside and run down the brick face. A drip groove, a small channel cast into the underside of the overhang, breaks that film of water so it drops clear of the chimney.

The groove sits near the outer edge of the overhang, and it has to run continuously around all four sides. A groove that stops short at a corner lets water find its way around the end. A drip edge is one of the crown requirements in R1003.9.1, and the groove is how a cast crown provides it.

What goes into the bond break at the flue

The bond break is the flexible joint between the crown and each flue tile. It lets the tile grow with heat without pushing on the concrete. The code calls for it to be caulked, following ASTM C1283, and the BIA detail shows a backer rod with sealant over it.

In practice we wrap the tile with a compressible material before the concrete is placed, then rake the top back and fill it with a primed backer and a sealant suited to heat and weather. The finished joint stays flexible. A crown poured tight against the tile, with no gap at all, is the fault this detail exists to prevent.
