What brushing lifts, from soot to first-stage flakes

The deposit that brushes out comes in two forms. Soot is dry black powder that falls away at the first pass. Flaky creosote is crunchier, sometimes tarry at the edges, and needs firmer bristles and extra passes, especially in the corners of a tile flue and on the smoke chamber walls.

Both come out in an ordinary sweep. How much came out, and in which form, goes on the record, because the next sweep can compare against it and tell whether buildup is speeding up or holding steady. A flue that nothing uses anymore
